CSG Training Products and Coaching Support Services

Training Courses

CSG provides a variety of courses designed to improve the ability of staff at all levels to interact effectively with colleagues, customers, and business partners.

Generic versions of all of the programs are available.  However, some degree of customization is recommended to ensure that examples and activities are relevant for actual participant groups and that the training targets real weaknesses and addresses situations that management wants to see strengthened and/or improved.  Fees for customization vary according to the nature and scope of changes requested.

Problem Solving and Decision Making in Groups 

Duration: 1.5 - 2 days

Objective:

This program develops and strengthens the problem-solving and decision-making skills of individuals and work teams.  It provides experience using a problem-solving framework and practice working for consensus to solve actual problems and make real decisions.

Topics:

  • A five-step problem-solving model

  • Tools for problem analysis

  • Tips and Techniques for brainstorming

  • Tips and Techniques for overcoming problem-solving “rough spots”

  • Problem-solving/decision-making practice (using client-specific, real situations)


Coaching for Managers

Duration: 1 day

Objective:

This program gives managers the awareness and skills they need to be effective “coaching managers” – managers who can help others to achieve real performance change and improvement.  Managers learn what they need to know to carry out the coaching part of their job responsibility effectively – to ensure their own success and the success of others.

Topics:

  • What is coaching?

  • Characteristics of effective coaches

  • How and when to coach

  • Tips and Techniques for providing positive feedback

  • Tips and Techniques for providing constructive feedback

  • Providing constructive feedback when the situation is emotionally charged

  • Using a problem-solving approach to determine ways to improve poor performance

  • Tips and Techniques for providing support and guidance 

Additional days of follow-up Coaching Support can also be provided, as needed.


Communication Skills for Managers

Duration: 1/2-1 day

Objective:

This program helps managers to improve their own communication skills and prepares them to perform a key role in strengthening these skills in their direct reports.  This is accomplished by (1) focusing managers’ attention on the overall importance of effective communication skills in carrying out job responsibilities and (2) presenting specific Tips and Techniques for developing and strengthening their own and others’ communication skills in two key areas – listening and data gathering.

Effective Writing

Duration: 2-days

Objective:

This program strengthens each participant’s writing ability and the impact and effectiveness of his/her written communications.  Specifically, content and practice focus on improving each participant’s ability to:

  • “Get started” quickly and easily
  • Organize thoughts and ideas
  • Draw conclusions and state them clearly and specifically
  • Write concisely
  • Eliminate vague language and replace it with clear, concrete, and specific words and phrases
  • Format written documents to strengthen their clarity and impact
  • Edit and revise to eliminate errors in style and sense

Topics:

  • Prewriting:  An Important First Step

  • Principles of Effective Writing

  • Formatting

  • Tips and Techniques for Writing Letters and Short Memos*

  • Tips and Techniques for Writing Long Memos, Reports, Summaries*

  • Creating a Final Draft (Editing and Revising)

* These “types” of writing are appropriate for most organizations.  Clients may substitute others if the ones shown are not relevant for certain groups of participants. 


Presentation Skills 

Duration: 2-days

Objective:

This program gives managers and staff at all levels the skills and practice needed to make them more effective communicators whenever they need to present or disseminate information and ideas orally – in formal as well as informal situations.

Topics:

  • Characteristics of effective presenters

  • Audience analysis

  • Potential barriers to effectiveness

  • Structure

  • Organizing for effectiveness and impact

  • Tips and Techniques for developing content and selecting supporting material

  • Tips and Techniques for developing strong openings and closings

  • Creating an outline to guide presentation

  • Verbal dynamics

  • Non-verbal dynamics

  • Eye contact and gestures

  • Visual aids


Team Building 

Duration: Typically 5-10 days depending on the number of participants and the nature and scope of the “real work" activity.

Objective:

This program improves the ability of individuals who work as a team to work together and collaborate effectively – with one another and with others.  During the training, they gain awareness and skills needed for effective teamwork and collaboration, and they work together to: (1) identify the strengths and weaknesses of their teamwork and collaboration; (2) perform “real” work while using new skills and behaviors in a “safe” environment; and (3) develop an Action Plan to build on strengths, minimize or eliminate weaknesses, and maintain continuous improvement.

Topics:

  • Assessing current level of teamwork and collaboration

  • Understanding and/or developing prerequisites for effective teams: Team Charter, Operating Agreement, Vision Statement

  • Characteristics of effective teams and team members

  • Roles and leadership

  • The team development sequence

  • Developing the Operating Agreement

  • Applying new skills and behaviors while completing real work (e.g., documenting selected processes and related procedures, strategic planning, budgeting, sales forecasting, etc.)
